Pain is Personal: How useful is 1-10 in rating chronic pain?

It is difficult for a healthcare practitioner, family member or friend to assess our pain, because pain is personal. Sometimes, it’s hard for me to assess my own pain overall. I am not sure it’s possible to rate overall pain from 1-10 without dissecting body parts like a lab rat.
